SAVE WATER, SAVE CARBON, SAVE MONEY (Press Release)
Did you know that using water wisely can help tackle climate change?
Climate change is probably the greatest environmental challenge facing the world today and carbon emissions are one of the main causes. Did you know that there is a direct link between carbon emissions and the water that is treated, pumped and supplied to your tap? Huge volumes of electricity are used when treating, pumping and distributing water, and some of this is generated from fossil fuel power stations, which emit carbon into the atmosphere.
Did you know that with the energy used to supply water to your home in one year you could boil enough water in your kettle to make around 12,000 mugs of tea? That’s enough for more than 30 cups per day!
Recognising the potential impact of climate change and the need to reduce carbon emissions, South Staffs Water are committed to reducing the amount of carbon they produce and aim to play an active role in reducing their contribution to the causes of, and adapting to climate change.
Their strategy was explained by Supply and Resources Director, Keith Marshall, "First, we will continue with our successful energy management programme to ensure that our pumps operate to the highest efficiency levels in the water industry: Secondly, we will continue to look for opportunities for renewable energy schemes including wind turbines, hydro turbines and solar panels: Thirdly, we will continue to implement a range of water efficiency programmes to encourage the more efficient use of water."
South Staffs’ also provide customers with useful, clear information about using water wisely so they can target ways to reduce their consumption without impacting on their lifestyle. One of the simplest ways to do this is to reduce the amount of hot water you use in your home by limiting the length of time you spend in the shower or looking at more water efficient showerheads when you come to refurbish your bathroom. If you use less hot water you save on your electricity bill because you use less energy to heat less water. If your water bill is based on metered use you will also save money on your water bill.
Further information about using water wisely in the home and garden is available here.
Remember, in helping to use water more efficiently you are not only helping to reduce the amount of carbon released to the atmosphere but also potentially saving yourself money.
