Employee testimonials
Don't just take our word for it that South Staffs Water is a great place to work.. read these testimonials to find out what some of our employees think about working here.
Gary Cox, 24, is a graduate engineer. He joined us nearly two years ago, two years after completing a degree in Forensic Engineering at Staffordshire University.
"Since joining the company on the graduate engineer programme, I’ve worked on placements in different companies within the group and have worked on a number of projects, mainly involving research and development, such as water and soil sampling, budgeting and costing, vacuum excavator trials and I’m currently on network modelling, which is a theoretical look at the pipe network system. I’ve even had the chance to sit in on interviews for new graduate engineers – it’s all about getting involved as much as possible.
"One of the best things about working here is the in-house training; it's really challenging and gives me a chance to develop myself.
"Being on the graduate engineer programme has given me the chance to work for different companies within the group and to see different parts of the business. I definitely want to stay within the group when I come to the end of the programme later this year. I have a passion for the company and want to take it further – and there are lots of opportunities in the water industry."
Stuart Whitfield - Leakage Manager
"I joined the Company in April 2001 with 10 years' previous experience in the industry.
"I am currently responsible for active leakage control operations - controlling and directing the activity of both employees and contract staff who work on active leakage control to contribute as appropriate to achieve business targets.
"Since joining I have completed two personal development courses. The first lasted for two years and covered core management techniques, in addition to looking at the functional areas of the business and their contribution to the overall operation of the business. The second course lasted a year and a half and looked at leadership and change management at an individual, team and organisational level."
Tim Wedge - Pump Efficiency Manager
"I joined in November 1980 as a Mechanical Design Draughtsman after serving an apprenticeship and working abroad for a number of years.
"By 1984 I was promoted to technical engineer, which involved testing pumping plant and specifying equipment for use across a wide range of uses.
"In 1989 I became treatment works manager with the responsibility for the operation of all the northern works including one of our reservoirs. I then became energy efficiency manager in 2001. I now have responsibility for pump testing and refurbishment.
"In 1991 I obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree which was funded by South Staffs Water. I have also, over the years, attended a number of courses.
"South Staffs Water is committed to, and operates, an "open door" policy. There is a great sense of co-operation and help within all areas. The flexible working scheme is great for allowing me to achieve a balance between life and work.
