Water supply and fittings regulations

The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 are national requirements for the design, installation and maintenance of plumbing systems, water fittings and water-using appliances.

As a water supplier, we have a legal duty to enforce the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 within our supply area.

Our key aims are to prevent:

  • Waste
  • Misuse
  • Undue consumption
  • Contamination
  • Mistakes in the measurement of water supplied by us

To enable us to effectively enforce these regulations, installers, architects, designers, developers, plumbers and contractors should be aware of them, and the need to notify us in advance for certain types of plumbing work.

South Staffs Water’s role

Our water inspectors check plumbing systems, processes and equipment.

They assess risk by identifying contraventions of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999; advise what remedial action is required, and the timescales in which the work must be carried out.

Once remedial work has been completed we carry out a re-inspection to ensure compliance with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999.
